Hi cj,
You're going to need oxygen available to your compost or you will have one heck of a stinky mess. Odor is easier to avoid in large suburban bins but if you have plenty of drier matter (old leaves, sawdust, garden soil) to cover with you should be OK with a trash can. Err on the side of too much "brown" dry stuff and too little moisture until you have a feel for what works. At most that will just slow down the process of decomp a bit.

Dicing some of your smellier and wetter items, mixing them well into your bin will help too

hi, can you please help. i have a very small backyard and I would like to compost with a metal container (i am scared of leaching plastics) for my community garden plot. now because my back is small the idea of putting kitchen scrapes in a container - i am assuming it will stink. is there a way to do a closed bin with no holes and if so what do i need to do thanks.
